Chapter 194 Reunion with Dai You
Chapter 194 Reunion with Dai You
Xia Lanyue didn't know how long she had slept; she just felt like she couldn't sleep soundly and couldn't wake up.
She could clearly hear the sounds coming from the people around her and Cuihong calling out to her.
But she didn't want to talk to anyone.
Now, she has lost her child, Xia Yao, and Dai You; she has lost everything she cared about.
She really wanted to just keep sleeping and never have to face any of this again.
She felt someone wipe away the tears from the corners of her eyes and put water on her lips.
She didn't respond, letting herself be manipulated, like a soulless mannequin.
Cuihong's voice, choked with sobs, rang in her ears, "Butler Zhang, what should we do? It's been two days, why hasn't she woken up yet?"
"She's probably just in a bad mood," said Steward Zhang. "The doctor examined her and said she's fine."
"Won't she never wake up again?" Cuihong's voice trembled slightly; it was clear she was genuinely afraid.
"No, she's just having a temporary mental breakdown. She'll be fine in a few days," said Butler Zhang.
"But I still think we shouldn't do this. If Miss can marry Young Master Xia, then they..."
"Cuihong," Butler Zhang interrupted Cuihong, "that young master Xia has no intention of marrying you, Miss. There's no possibility between them."
“You’re talking nonsense. That’s what the townspeople are saying. They have a very good relationship,” Cuihong said, a little angry.
Butler Zhang didn't respond immediately. After hearing the rustling sound, Xia Lanyue heard Cui Hong's voice again and asked, "What's written on this? I can't read."
"This is the contract for annulling the engagement written by Young Master Xia," said Steward Zhang. "I found it in the basket that the waiter was cleaning up while we were staying at Yunji Inn those days."
Hearing these words, Xia Lanyue felt a sharp pain in her heart.
She wanted to question Butler Zhang, but her body felt like it wasn't her own, and she couldn't control it at all.
Xia Lanyue was completely heartbroken.
The room became very quiet, except for the sound of someone sobbing.
Xia Lanyue guessed that Cuihong was feeling sad for her.
In the evening, Xia Yao returned home to get money, but he didn't see Xia Lanyue for a long time and seemed to notice something unusual.
After what happened with Li Zhuang, Xia Lanyue would return home before dark and never linger outside.
Xia Yao waited from dusk till nightfall, but Xia Lanyue still hadn't appeared, and he started to panic.
Xia Lanyue's clothes were all in the closet, showing no signs of her leaving, which further convinced him that Xia Lanyue had not moved out.
So, where can she go?
Xia Yao didn't care that it was the middle of the night and the neighbors were already asleep, and knocked on the neighbor's door directly.
"Auntie, I've been away from home for the past few days. Do you know where my wife has gone?" Xia Yao asked.
"Your wife isn't home?" the aunt asked sleepily. "I don't know either, she hasn't come looking for me."
"Have you done anything unusual in the past few days?" Xia Yao asked, still worried.
The aunt looked troubled. "I... I've never met her, I can't help you."
"Thank you, Auntie."
Xia Yao thanked him and then went home.
He was restless, pacing back and forth in the yard. Finally, as if he had thought of something, he hurriedly went to a house by the lake.
Xia Yao knocked on the door.
A man's voice asked cautiously, "Who is it?"
"It's me, Xia Yao."
Then, a familiar face appeared in front of Xia Yao; it was Zhou Yuan.
"I have something I want to ask you," Xia Yao said first.
"Brother Zhou, please speak."
"Young Miss, you're awake!" Cuihong exclaimed in surprise as she ran towards Xia Lanyue.
Xia Lanyue stared blankly at the bed curtains, not wanting to speak.
With tears streaming down her face, Cuihong asked, "Are you hungry? Do you want some water? Is your stomach still upset?"
Despite Cuihong's concern for Xia Lanyue, Xia Lanyue remained deaf to her concerns, lost in her own sorrow.
Out of fear, Cuihong ran to fetch the housekeeper.
The butler shook his head as he looked at Xia Lanyue's dazed expression.
Cuihong originally thought that Steward Zhang would say a few words of comfort to Xia Lanyue, but to her surprise, he said, "Miss, now that you're awake, let's set off back to the capital tomorrow."
"Butler Zhang, do you have any conscience? Miss just had a miscarriage and hasn't recovered yet. How can she endure the bumpy journey?" Cuihong said anxiously.
"There are carriages on the road, and you maids are taking care of things, so there won't be any problems," Steward Zhang said, glancing at Xia Lanyue with displeasure. "Cuihong, you've been getting more and more unruly lately."
Cuihong was nervous and dared not say anything more.
Xia Lanyue came to her senses and tried to sit up, but Cuihong pressed her back down.
"Young Miss, don't move, lie down, and tell Cuihong if you need anything."
Xia Lanyue glared at Butler Zhang, "I'm not leaving."
Butler Zhang, contrary to his previous polite attitude, said in a firm tone, "Miss, you are not feeling well, so you don't need to worry about these things. I will arrange everything."
Unsurprisingly, the next day, Xia Lanyue was carried onto a carriage back to the city.
Steward Zhang was a man of conscience; he hired a doctor to accompany him at a high salary.
Xia Lanyue seemed to have anticipated this outcome and did not show excessive excitement.
She's waiting, waiting for the day she goes back, to settle this score then.
That's how horse-drawn carriages are: they run during the day and rest at night.
On the third day of their journey, their carriage suddenly came to a sharp stop. Xia Lanyue had no time to react and rolled to the side of the carriage door.
"Oh dear, Miss, are you alright?" Cuihong, disregarding her own condition, scrambled to her feet to help Xia Lanyue up, and called out to the outside, "Driver, slow down! You've hurt Miss!"
The butler's voice came from outside the car, but it wasn't a response to them. The butler said, "Dai You, you came all this way on your own. Come back with us. The master wants to see you."
Xia Lanyue was startled and sat up.
Dai You has arrived. Has he come to see her?! Xia Lanyue thought to herself, and tears were already streaming down her face uncontrollably.
Cuihong quickly wiped away her tears, saying, "Miss, you can't cry, it's bad for your health," and then stepped forward to lift the curtain.
Dai You rode on horseback, blocking the way for their caravan. Accompanying him were Jiang Di and several of his brothers.
Dai You glanced at the carriage and said to Butler Zhang, "Butler Zhang, the young lady cannot go back with you."
Upon hearing this, several servants stood beside Steward Zhang, blocking Dai You from view.
Butler Zhang said to Dai You, "Dai You, are these all your brothers? They've improved a lot in just a few days, hehehe."
Dai You smiled dismissively. "Thank you for the compliment, Butler Zhang. However, I'm here today to take Dai Xiyue away, and I hope you won't stop me."
"Hahaha, you're joking. Look at all the people I've brought out, you should understand what's going on, right? If you know what's good for you, come back with me obediently," said Butler Zhang.
Dai You pushed through the crowd and looked into the carriage, his eyes meeting Xia Lanyue's. Seeing her aggrieved face, his eyes softened.
"Dai You, I can tell this guy isn't going to release them. Let's stop wasting time arguing and just take them," Jiang Di said, losing patience.
Butler Zhang was not afraid. He raised his hand and bowed to Jiang Di, saying, "Young man, what I discussed with Dai You was a family matter. I don't know how he told you, so I hope you will not interfere."
Jiang Di tilted his head back and said disdainfully, "Brother Dai's business is my business. Besides, Miss Dai clearly doesn't want to go with you, so why are you making things difficult for her?!"
“Young man, you’ve misunderstood. I’m the Dai family’s butler, and my purpose in coming here is to take Miss home. Since we’re going home, why would you say I’m unwilling?” Butler Zhang said.
Jiang Di seemed to know that Steward Zhang would not release the person easily, but she could not persuade him, so she looked at Dai You and waited for his instructions.
"Butler Zhang, Dai Xiyue isn't leaving. Should we release her or not?" Dai You asked.
The atmosphere became tense, and several servants, sensing the danger, silently drew their knives...
