Chapter 137 The Pursuer
Chapter 137 The Pursuer
Zhan and Bai Ling counted out ten baskets of dried meat and shouted to Li, the chief of the Dahe tribe, "The dried meat is ready. Have someone come and carry it over."
Li, the chief of the Dahe tribe, shouted, "Carry it over yourself, we don't have time right now."
Zhan wasn't in a hurry. He simply found a rock and sat down: "I'm not in a hurry either. You can have your people come and carry it whenever you're done with your work."
Li rolled his eyes and said, "I know. Our tribe has prepared the salt. Remember to have your tribesmen carry it."
Bai Ling stood beside Zhan, watching people from different tribes exchange goods. It was getting late, and the number of people in front of the stalls of other tribes was gradually decreasing, while the number of people in front of the stalls of the Great River Tribe was increasing.
Moreover, all those queuing up were males. Bai Ling also saw many males from her own tribe, and all of them had partners.
Looking again at the small jars, no bigger than two palms, and how the males immediately put the jars into their baskets and covered them tightly after exchanging them, Bai Ling suddenly realized something.
Before the house was destroyed by the flood, he seemed to have seen this kind of small jar in his father's room. The jar was placed where his father slept and was covered with animal skin.
He was still not fully awake at the time. While playing in his father's room, he accidentally knocked the little jar over. His father was startled when he saw it, blushed, took the jar back, and chased him out of the house, making him play in the yard.
Considering that only males were buying it here, and recalling how his father's face turned red the moment he saw him pull out the small jar, Bai Ling really wanted to know what it was.
Now that she knew what it was, Bai Ling dared not look in that direction anymore.
As Bai Ling was lost in thought, he suddenly heard someone call out to him, "Ling, hello."
*
It was an unfamiliar voice. He looked up and saw a young orc standing not far from him.
He was a female with delicate features, red lips and white teeth, bright eyes when he smiled, and a small dimple on his left cheek.
He is an orc who looks very sunny and cheerful.
Behind the orc stood several young females, all secretly smiling and glancing at Bai Ling.
Bai Ling didn't recognize the young female, but since she had called out to him, he felt embarrassed to pretend he hadn't heard her, so he politely asked, "May I ask who you are?"
The orc's face flushed slightly, but he wasn't shy. Instead, he said frankly, "My name is Su, and I come from the Great River Tribe. I'd like to invite you to come with me for a stroll, is that alright?"
Inviting him to go shopping? Bai Ling was genuinely taken aback. They didn't know each other before, so why was he inviting her to go shopping right away?
Are orcs all this direct in making friends?
Making friends? Bai Ling immediately understood. Orcs were indeed very direct; they would immediately approach and make friends with anyone they liked.
However, Bai Ling was already a beastman with a partner, so he immediately rejected the female beastman named Su: "I'm sorry, I'm not available."
Despite being rejected, Su did not leave immediately. Instead, she asked, "Is there anything inconvenient? I see you've finished everything on your end."
Bai Ling said directly, "Because I already have someone I like, and I'm going to go see him in a little while."
Su listened without saying anything more. He nodded to Bai Ling and then turned to leave. After taking a few steps, Su turned back, bowed to Bai Ling, and said, "Ling, my grandfather is very old, and his legs ache terribly every winter. He spent last winter in your tribe, and he said he had a very comfortable winter and his legs didn't hurt at all. Ling, thank you."
Bai Ling quickly waved her hand: "I didn't do anything, you don't need to thank me."
Su shook her head and said, "Ling, you have done a lot. Not only me, but all the orcs in our tribe are very grateful to you."
"I wish you can marry the person you love and live a happy life together," Su said.
Now it was Bai Ling's turn to thank him: "Su, thank you for your blessing."
*
Bai Ling initially thought this was just a sudden incident, but to his surprise, more than a dozen young females approached him and invited him to take a stroll, while a young orc offered to give him exquisitely crafted ornaments.
Orcs are known for their straightforward and bold personalities. Young orcs are also very direct when it comes to finding a partner. If they see a single member of the opposite sex who is pleasing to the eye, they will go up and talk to them directly. If the other person is also interested, they will go for a walk together. If they feel it is a good match, they will spend more time together. If it is not a good match, they will part ways and go on to find another member of the opposite sex who is pleasing to the eye.
Even females will take the initiative to pursue males they find attractive.
Bai Ling was a little confused. To be honest, this was his first time attending the Chada Conference, so why were so many females taking the initiative to get to know him?
Chief Zhan sat on a rock and watched as several females approached Bai Ling to chat him up, but he thought it was normal.
When orcs seek mates, they consider two things: first, physical attraction. Ling is handsome, with a sunny disposition, like a tree in summer, full of vitality and radiance. Being with an orc like him brings warmth. Second, orcs ultimately admire strength. While Ling isn't the most valiant, he discovered a way to eat large roots of grass, invented the kang (heated brick bed), and created iron tools... all of which improved the orcs' lives. This is far more powerful than mere bravery.
Ling possesses both of these qualities; how could a young female not like him?
If a male like Ling had appeared when he was young, he would have liked him too.
However, he is now older and has long since found a life partner, so he can only admire younger people like Ling.
A mischievous smile flashed across Zhan's eyes. He stood up and walked to Bai Ling's side, saying, "Ling, it seems you're quite popular. This is only the first day of the Chada Conference. This morning, most of the beastmen were exchanging items. By the afternoon, I'm afraid even more females will be coming to invite you to play."
Bai Ling was also troubled by this matter. He said, "Chieftain, I won't come over this afternoon if I don't have anything else to do. I'll stay in the tribe and watch over things for everyone."
Chief Zhan said meaningfully, "Ling, are you really not coming? If we're talking about who has the most suitors, all the surrounding tribes combined, it's definitely Yue. Yue is both brave and beautiful, and most of the males in the surrounding tribes are her suitors."
Before Zhan could finish speaking, Bai Ling had already stood up and ran out like a gust of wind.
