Chapter 333 Central Tribe

Autumn is the harvest season, and this year the tribe has harvested an exceptionally large amount of food; the cassava alone is enough to feed all the orcs in the tribe.

There was also a warm kang (heated brick bed), sharp iron tools, and a useful bow and arrow—all of which were brought by Bai Ling.

Chen and Xiao were dragged off to dance by the orcs, leaving Yue alone. He lowered his head and slowly ate his food, while many eyes were secretly observing him.

Several young females approached, glanced at Yue a few times, and then an orc stepped forward and asked, "Are you Yue?"

Yue was taken aback at first, then realized what was happening and nodded, saying, "I am Yue."

The young orcs laughed again, and one of them said, "We heard that Ling's partner is named Yue. When we see Yue, it's like seeing the real moon, beautiful and serene."

Another young orc said, "We used to think he was lying. The moon hangs in the sky, how could anyone be like the moon? But now I believe him."

The young females stared at Yue with admiration in their eyes. One of the orcs said, "Yue, I've heard you're very powerful, the strongest warrior in the entire tribe? I'm also very good at hunting. When do you have time? Let's go hunting together."

Yue hadn't actually hunted anything along the way. Catching a few small animals wasn't considered hunting at all; it was just a warm-up activity. Now that someone had invited him to go hunting, Yue was itching to try.

Yue thought for a moment and asked, "It's autumn now, aren't you harvesting the crops?"

The young orc who invited Yue to go hunting said, "The most common crop in the tribe is cassava, so it doesn't matter if the cassava harvest is a day or two late."

Yue Xin was tempted. He glanced in Bai Ling's direction and said, "I also really want to go hunting, but we have a lot of things to do and can't find the time to go hunting right now."

The orc who invited Yue to go hunting asked, "When do you have time, Yue?"

Yue: "Let's discuss this with the Grand Elder."

A young orc immediately said, "I'll go ask the Grand Elder."

The elder thought for a moment and said, "Once things are settled, you can invite all the young people from the tribe to come over and hunt together with me."

The Great Elder's tribe was the largest tribe Bai Ling had ever seen, with more than four thousand orcs living in it. Bai Ling received a warm welcome upon arrival.

Knowing that Bai Ling and his group had arrived, several elders from the central tribe rushed over overnight. They gathered together to discuss the matter and decided that the first thing they needed to do was to get the iron smelting furnace out.

The central tribe's territory was very large, and they had found several iron mines. With iron mines, they could smelt iron, and with iron tools, the tribe could do even more.

Take farming as an example. Iron farming tools are scarce in the tribe. Most orcs use tools made of wood and bone to farm, which greatly increases the burden on them and makes farming much more difficult.

For example, when digging cassava, the progress is vastly different depending on whether you use a shovel or wood and bones.

Even so, there are still substitutes available. For tools like plows, there are no substitutes at all, so the orcs of the central tribe had to skip this step.

Besides farming, iron tools are needed in all aspects of life. The sooner iron tools are made, the sooner the beastmen's lives will become more convenient.

Bai Ling visited several places where iron ore had been discovered and ultimately decided to mine an iron ore deposit in a valley first.

The valley is large and lush with trees, with a river flowing through it. Moreover, most of the ore in this iron mine is on the surface, making it easier to mine.

Now that the location had been chosen, the orcs got to work immediately. The adobe bricks for building the houses were continuously transported over by the Sky Orcs, and in less than four or five days, the iron smelting furnace and three houses were built.

The central village has no bricks or tiles; the houses in Bailing are made of adobe, with thick straw mats on the rafters and yellow mud on top. Although such roofs are not as sturdy as tiles, they can still keep out the wind and rain.

Once the iron smelting house was built, Bai Ling immediately returned to the tribe to instruct the orcs on how to build a brick kiln using adobe bricks.

Once the brick kiln was built and the iron smelting furnace was almost dry, it was time to start smelting iron.

This was the umpteenth time Bai Ling had smelted iron; he was intimately familiar with it all. Under Bai Ling's guidance, the orcs of the Central Tribe crushed the iron ore, put it into the smelting furnace, stirred the molten iron, and forged steel. Finally, witnessed by several tribal chiefs, the Central Tribe's first ironware was born.

Unlike the long sword forged by Bai Ling, the first ironware forged by the Central Tribe was an iron shovel.

This was a decision made by several tribal chiefs after discussion. The tribe is currently carrying out the autumn harvest, and the most important thing is to quickly make a batch of farming tools. With farming tools, the autumn harvest in the tribe will be more successful.

The fire in the iron smelting furnace never went out, and the sound of hammering iron echoed from morning till night. One farm tool after another was forged and sent to the places where it was most needed.

Bai Ling doesn't need to worry about iron smelting for now. Several beastmen have worked in the iron smelting workshop of the High Tree Tribe and know the process, so Bai Ling doesn't need to be there every day.

Bai Ling then led the tribesmen who came with her to help the central tribe make bricks and tiles, produce cement and lime, and manufacture glass.

Before winter arrives, Bai Ling needs to help the orcs of the central tribe build some houses.

In the past, there wasn't much to do in winter, and the orcs would stay in their caves. But this year is different; the orcs can use the winter to do many things.

Several orcs in the central tribe have learned carpentry, and this winter is their chance to show off their skills. To do carpentry, they must first build a house.

Bai Ling and his people were extremely busy, and the orcs of the central tribe were also completely occupied. They had to harvest crops, make bricks and tiles, produce charcoal, smelt iron, cut down trees, and make cement, lime, and glass...

Apart from children and the elderly, there is not a single orc in the tribe who is idle. They all leave early and return late, and some don't even come back for lunch, eating their lunch in the wild.

Even though they were busy, the beastmen still had smiles on their faces, because everything they did was like building a house, as Ling had said, adding bricks and tiles to their future good life.
