Chapter 1988 - 1989: Investigating the Stone Chamber

The cave wasn't very large, but due to the vigilance against possible dangers that might appear at any moment, the two moved slowly, frequently scouting their surroundings.Eventually, after a moment's pause, the two finally arrived in a stone chamber.

The area of the stone chamber before them was vast, and there at the end stood a stone wall, suggesting they had reached the cave's end, transformed into a stone chamber.

The stone chamber door was made of wood and was eroded to a pile of wooden debris over the years, allowing Lin Chen and Qing Ling to see the chamber's interior immediately.

In the stone chamber, right at its center, lay a futon, upon which sat a shadowy figure!

Both Qing Ling and Lin Chen's pupils shrunk upon seeing this scene, but they quickly realized that the silhouette had already turned into a skeleton—a mere corpse.

On each side of the corpse grew several medicinal herbs, but the quantity was scarce.

What truly captivated Qing Ling and Lin Chen's attention was an ancient stone table behind the skeletal remains, upon which sat several antique boxes, covered in dust, yet their sight instantly made Qing Ling and Lin Chen's eyes sparkle!

Even so, neither of them rushed forward; instead, they exchanged glances and stayed silent.

Then Qing Ling turned her gaze back to the boxes and spoke to Lin Chen:

"Lin Chen! Since we're partners now, let's clarify in advance. I can't say how many relics of the Divine King there are, but regardless of the amount, we must settle on an allocation beforehand!"

Lin Chen nodded at her words; Qing Ling was making a good point. Though Lin Chen had the ability to overpower Qing Ling, even kill her, his intuition advised against it!

He was eager to understand what Qing Ling meant by her distribution principle.

Thus, Lin Chen smiled slightly and responded to Qing Ling:

"Naturally, so Qing, tell me, how should we split these treasures most appropriately?"

Upon hearing this, Qing Ling cast a shrewd smile, her beautiful eyes seemingly able to speak, lively, making her seem full of Spiritual Energy. Lin Chen did admire her, albeit only superficially.

Qing Ling proposed:

"Lin Chen, let's see, everything visible within the Divine King's cave will be split equally based on value! You and I—half each! However, I discovered this cave and the news of the Divine King's relics, so among all the items, I wish to choose one particular piece!"

Lin Chen squinted his eyes at her words; he had no objection to splitting everything equally, for he truly hadn't contributed much effort. Grabbing half the treasures was fortunate enough.

But Qing Ling said she had the opportunity to choose one specific treasure.

Meaning, if Lin Chen acquired a particularly fine treasure and Qing Ling singled it out, by principle, Lin Chen couldn't refuse!

After hesitating for a moment, Lin Chen nodded and said:

"Alright! Let's proceed as you suggested, Qing!"

Upon his agreement, Qing Ling smiled:

"Good! Lin Chen, I must say you're not stingy!"

Saying so, Qing Ling surprised even herself, given their current adversarial status and the collaborative relationship Lin Chen enforced upon her. Her words seemed as if they were supposed to partner up all along.

The rationale was simple; nearly everyone faltered against Qing Ling's allure, who often appeared aloof, hard to approach, yet many eagerly fawned over her. This led Qing Ling to instinctively assume these mercenaries, especially the young males among them, were subservient to her.

Yet Lin Chen was a total exception, seemingly blind to her beauty, ruthlessly forced an accord, compelling her to explore the Divine King's cave alongside him.

This stark contrast made Qing Ling quite fond of Lin Chen, naturally easing their interaction; hearing her remark, Lin Chen was slightly surprised, raised an eyebrow, and did not say much else, only lightly nodded, then said:

"Alright, since it's settled, let's head inside!"

With that, Lin Chen led the way forward.

Seeing Lin Chen didn't dwell on her previous embarrassment, Qing Ling breathed a sigh of relief, as she didn't want others mocking her for such a shameful moment. However, for some reason, witnessing Lin Chen showing no interest in her left her somewhat disappointed, as if Lin Chen wasn't supposed to behave indifferently towards her.

What was happening to her?

Collecting her thoughts, Qing Ling preferred not to dwell on these chaotic matters, quickly catching up with Lin Chen's stride, not wanting Lin Chen to seize all treasures despite her opportunity to name a coveted piece!

Before long, they cautiously arrived outside the stone chamber, observing the serene surroundings, dust settled everywhere, even cobwebs spun in the corners, a picture of decay.

Seeing Lin Chen hesitate to enter, silently observing their surroundings, Qing Ling wondered about his intent, then boldly stepped forward, whereupon Lin Chen quietly warned:

"Careful!"

Immediately following Lin Chen's words, a surge of divine energy erupted from the ground, upward, poised to sever the startled Qing Ling in half!

At that crucial moment, Qing Ling lunged forward, crashing heavily to the ground, while she was pressed beneath someone.

At the critical juncture, Lin Chen wasted no time in pulling Qing Ling down; after all, Qing Ling led the exploration, and if she died, Lin Chen would be akin to a headless fly, lost and directionless. Besides, Lin Chen did not detest Qing Ling, subtly admiring her, unwilling to witness such a delicate beauty bisected before him.

Glancing back, the divine energy burst had created a deep fissure in the cave's ceiling; Lin Chen exhaled in relief, then asked:

"Are you alright?"
